More than a Schoolhouse where children come to learn and grow, Dandelion is a supportive and inclusive community that intentionally builds a sense of belonging and shared experiences. Coming together for these meaningful events strengthens connections between children and parents, enriching their time at Dandelion. Below are just a few of the many events we offer throughout the year -

Our Montessori and STEAM learning groups meet on regular schedules throughout the Academic Year - and schedules may be one half day to six half days each week - to meet your homeschool's goals and needs. Many members call Dandelion their "school," and we offer only the best parts of it - community, relationships, self-discovery, autonomy, rich resources, and experienced educators with love for learning to share!

Family first and always. The first Thursday of each month at 6 pm is set aside for parents and staff to gather with coffee and snacks to share their successes, ideas, questions, and challenges. These "listening conversations" are supportive, informative, and uplifting. They help us connect with each other, our children, and our goals for working and learning together.

We love where we live! The second Friday of each month, we organize. and offer Family Field Trips to a nearby location with some "chaperoned seats" for ages 7+ who wish to attend without a parent. Our destinations include museums, parks, gardens, and businesses that align with our goals for growing and learning together!

We love where we learn! Day Camp Days are offered on the first and third Friday of each month and two weeks each summer for everyone. These drop-off days are opportunities to share our space and to extend our learning!

We're proud to be members of Kids for Peace, an international organization that works to "empower and mobilize youth to create peace through hands-on service, global friendships and thoughtful acts of kindness." You'll notice our commitment to this mission in events throughout the year!

This welcome-back event allows children and families, both new and returning, to connect and celebrate the start of a new school year. It is a wonderful way for children to explore the Schoolhouse before their first day, interact with friends old and new, and ease back into life at Dandelion!

We begin the year collecting items to deliver to the Tri-Area Food Pantry. Just down the block, TAM is a fully volunteer organization that has been in operation since 1988, helping feed over 20,000 local families. We're lucky to get to learn from their dedication and service!

Our work with Tri-Area Food Pantry, collecting and delivering food for those in need helps set the stage for families to come together, share a meal, and celebrate our community with gratitude. Community service is a wonderful way for children to learn about the larger community and discover their power to contribute as caring citizens. Pairing that with our celebration helps build an understanding and appreciation for our own autonomy and strength.

As the winter season begins, we come together to mark this period of quiet reflection before we head off to our December break. Marking time on the calendar, such as this, helps children connect with the natural world and appreciate th seasons. In this moment, we take time to intentionally slow down, enjoy a time of conversation and connection, celebrate light with lanterns we create together, and exchange treats and goodwill for a prosperous and happy season.

This fun event brings families together for an evening of dinner and dancing, celebrating friendships and raising money for our work with Kids for Peace, an international organization that works to "empower and mobilize youth to create peace through hands-on service, global friendships and thoughtful acts of kindness." In the past we have donated proceeds from this event to BeLoved Asheville and Wake Forest Hope House, helping children understand their ability to impact positive change in their community and world.

This is a fun-filled, high energy, interactive day held outdoors at locations like Blue Jay Point Park, designed to promote teamwork, physical activity, and school spirit through fun, and cooperative, games. The events typically feature a variety of stations, relay races, and water-based activities designed to be inclusive for students of all ages and abilities. Children help design various activities and have a voice in choosing favorites to include in the day. Parent volunteers help to make this event memorable and run smoothly. It truly is a time for our community to come together and have tons of fun in the sun!

What better way to celebrate our community at the end of the year than to come together and highlight the talents and passions of children? Each child is invited to share a project, a piece of art or a passion with the community. A talent show highlights the artistic and creative endeavors of children as they share songs, dance, stories, poems and even a magic trick or two! While not all children choose to participate in sharing, our children truly come together to cheer each other on, showing support and excitement for their peers. Families are invited and this event reminds us all just how special our community is.
