Support for Twice-Exceptional & Neurodivergent Learners

A place where a child can work ahead in their strengths and get real support in their struggles, and at the same time, without being boxed into a single grade level or label.

Schedule A Tour

How Traditional Schools Miss The Mark

Unfortunately, most schools and classrooms are built to serve one grade level and one age group at a time, and gifted kids who are also autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or otherwise wired differently often experience asynchronous development leading to masking and burnout because they’re desperately trying to leverage their gifts to hide their struggles.

At Dandelion Learning Collaborative, we’re built for kids to move at their own pace for all things – because no two children learn everything at the same pace.  Every day, every plan, every subject area, and every child can be met with the tools they need and teachers who can guide them to next steps in learning.   When you’re not limited by grade-level targets or same-age grouping, learning is limitless!

Why Even “Gifted Programs” in Traditional Schools Often Fail

The mismatch often stems from a lack of appropriate challenge. While many schools offer gifted programs, these typically prioritize quantity over quality, asking students to do more of the same tasks rather than engaging them in meaningfully different work.

For a 2e child, an “appropriate challenge” involves inquiry-based exploration and project-based learning tailored to their passions. Instead of repetitive worksheets, they might engage in deep-dive research into a complex topic or solve real-world problems that require higher-order thinking. Without this, gifted children often experience boredom, frustration, and even anxiety or perfectionism, as their advanced cognitive development frequently outpaces their social-emotional maturity.

True support means viewing the child as a composite of strengths and challenges, setting learning demands that stimulate their intellect while explicitly addressing their developmental gaps.

Dandelion Thrives In Helping 2E Children

Our Montessori-based program at Dandelion thrives in this space by eliminating the rigidities of traditional settings through an intentionally curated environment and individualized work plans.

  • We provide plans, materials, and learning for all grade levels in the same room at all times.  Each child accesses our self-paced spiral curriculum and creates their own personal learning plan with teacher guidance.  This means both acceleration in areas of support and scaffolding for areas of challenge are available to all kids every minute of every day.   We provide all of these in the same classroom.  Kids don’t have to wait to be “pulled out” for a special group for “gifted” or “intervention,”  these supports are always happening and always available.
  • Multi-age classrooms provide a “sweet spot” for all kids – especially those with marked asynchronous development.   Without rigid age boxes, kids are neither limited nor pressured by assignments that might be a mis-fit for their knowledge, skills, age, or interest.  They always have access to peers, teachers, and materials that help them move forward in their learning, no matter where it starts.
  • With a minimum 1:8 teacher-to-student ratio and always at least two educators actively working with students, qualified content, Montessori and special educators are in the classroom and available to provide experience and personalized support for every child.
  • We are skilled in the art of self-directed education and masters of content standards.  We know how to recognize opportunities and student needs and provide targeted academic, emotional, and social support, including co-regulation and skill development.
  • Our room is ready with Montessori materials and contemporary hands-on tools that provide concrete, multisensory entry points to abstract concepts in kindergarten-to-8th-grade content. We foster self-direction & interest-led work – not worksheets and assignments that feel like stop-and-go signs.  This honors the intensities and deep passions and works with children to capitalize on opportunities for learning instead of suppressing them.
  • Our Schoolhouse is a prepared, calm environment with a rhythm that is both flexible and reliable.   As opposed to traditional discipline or systems of rewards and consequences that can antagonize sensitive nervous systems, we practice peace education in our community. This means that boundaries, reactions, and procedures are both respectful to students and executed in a consistent and reliably calm manner, providing a sensory-aware, low-shame, and predictable atmosphere that centers learning and growth – not compliance, masking, and burnout.

Radically Inclusive by Design

Every child experiences a celebration of their strengths and a deep sense of belonging in our space.   We are a secular, radically inclusive community, and this philosophy is shared by our families.  Children are expected to behave like children here.

Our first step every day is to ensure that all children are known, welcome, and affirmed for who they are and all they bring to share with us.

What Families Notice

Occasionally, children who enter our Schoolhouse bring with them school experiences that were upsetting, demeaning, activated shame, or simply just “too much” for them.

In our Schoolhouse, we see children who previously withdrew, avoided, misbehaved, and or melted-down in school (or in transitions to or from it), now engage thoughtfully in work and play with us, connect with other children and adults, and become leaders both at Dandelion and at home.

Have a Question?

We welcome and appreciate any “paperwork” or insight that a diagnosis and accompanying information can provide.

We also welcome all and respond to each child’s needs “in kind.”  If we notice frequent behaviors or interactions that raise concern or seem like an opportunity for growth, we will gladly provide our own insight and/or are happy to complete questionnaires or other documentation requested by medical professionals.

Yes.  We do not provide these plans and instead provide support for all children; however, we are familiar with and will provide all the accommodations that our environment and staffing allow.

We acknowledge that, as is the nature of work with children, our main space can be “too busy” or “too noisy” for some.

We provide a “quiet room,” alternate seating options, breaks, and welcome the use of headphones/ear plugs, glasses, or other reasonable supports for all members.

We are not a full-time school. We are a part-time program for which you may sign your child up for 2-6 half days per week for the academic year. Our schedule is intentionally designed around the needs of families and children and free from institutional or state constraints. This flexibility allows you to seamlessly blend high-quality group programs at the Dandelion Schoolhouse with your family’s unique lifestyle and create balance, including:

  • At-home learning and personalized core studies.
  • Optional Dandelion Community activities – Friday field trips, Camp Days, and community events.
  • Outside enrichments that you choose – such as other co-ops, sports leagues, music – you select the combination and providers that best support your child’s homeschool education and your family’s values.
